How Much Do You Know About Gas Cylinders? Key Points for Safe Use and Management

Date:2025.04.15

Gas cylinders or steel cylinders are widely used in modern industrial production and daily life. Whether it's the medical oxygen steel cylinders in hospitals or the liquefied petroleum gas cylinders used in household kitchens, they provide indispensable support for our lives and work. However, since most of the gases stored in gas cylinders are high-pressure, flammable, explosive, or toxic and harmful, if they are not used and managed properly, safety accidents are likely to occur. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the relevant knowledge of gas cylinders and master the correct usage methods and management key points.

Classification of Gas Cylinders

There are a wide variety of gas cylinders, and they can be classified in many ways according to different standards. According to the nature of the medium contained, they can be divided into permanent gas cylinders (such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, etc.), liquefied gas cylinders (such as liquefied petroleum gas, liquid ammonia, etc.), and dissolved gas cylinders (such as acetylene cylinders). According to the manufacturing method, they can be divided into seamless gas cylinders and welded gas cylinders. Seamless gas cylinders are generally made of high-quality alloy steel or stainless steel and are suitable for containing high-pressure gases; welded gas cylinders are made by welding thin steel plates and are often used for containing low-pressure liquefied gases.

Structure and Principle of Gas Cylinders

Take the common seamless gas cylinder as an example. It is mainly composed of parts such as the cylinder body, cylinder valve, cylinder cap, and anti-vibration ring. The cylinder body is the main part for storing gas, which is manufactured with special materials and processes and has sufficient strength and pressure resistance. The cylinder valve is a key component for controlling the inlet and outlet of gas, and its quality and performance directly affect the safe use of the gas cylinder. The cylinder cap can protect the cylinder valve from collision and damage, and the anti-vibration ring can reduce the vibration and impact on the gas cylinder during the handling process.

The working principle of a gas cylinder is to use the compressibility of the gas to store the gas in the cylinder under a certain pressure. When the gas needs to be used, the gas is released through the cylinder valve and processed such as decompression before being supplied to the user. For example, the oxygen in the oxygen cylinder is stored in a gaseous state under high pressure, and when in use, the high-pressure oxygen is reduced to an appropriate pressure through a pressure reducing valve and then transported to the place where it is needed.

Key Points for the Safe Use of Gas Cylinders

  1. Select the Gas Cylinder Correctly: Select a suitable gas cylinder according to the type and purpose of the gas used. Ensure that the design pressure, volume, and other parameters of the gas cylinder meet the usage requirements.
  2. Installation and Connection: When installing the cylinder valve and other accessories, ensure that the connection is firm and the sealing is good. Use appropriate hoses and connectors and avoid using aged and damaged hoses.
  3. Usage Environment: The gas cylinder should be placed in a well-ventilated, dry place, away from fire sources and heat sources. Avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature environments to prevent the pressure in the gas cylinder from rising due to excessive temperature.
  4. Operation Specification: Open the cylinder valve slowly to avoid the danger of static electricity caused by the too-fast gas flow rate due to sudden opening. Pay attention to observing the pressure change of the gas cylinder during use. When the pressure drops to the specified value, stop using it and replace the gas cylinder.
  5. Regular Inspection: Regularly conduct an appearance inspection of the gas cylinder to check whether there are defects such as cracks, deformations, and corrosion on the cylinder body. Check whether the cylinder valve, pressure reducing valve, and other accessories are working properly. If there are any abnormalities, repair or replace them in a timely manner.

Management and Maintenance of Gas Cylinders

  1. Storage Management: Gas cylinders should be stored classified. Different types of gas cylinders should be stored separately, and there should be obvious signs. The storage place should meet the safety requirements, and necessary fire-fighting facilities and protective equipment should be equipped.
  2. Handling and Transportation: When handling gas cylinders, they should be handled with care. Throwing, dropping, rolling, and collision are strictly prohibited. Use appropriate handling tools, such as hand trucks. When transporting gas cylinders, they should be fixed to prevent the gas cylinders from rolling and colliding during transportation.
  3. Regular Inspection: According to relevant regulations, gas cylinders should be inspected regularly. Generally speaking, seamless gas cylinders should be inspected every three years, and welded gas cylinders should be inspected every two years. Only the gas cylinders that pass the inspection can continue to be used.
  4. Scrap Disposal: For gas cylinders that have exceeded the service life or failed the inspection, they should be scrapped in a timely manner. It is strictly prohibited to continue using the scrapped gas cylinders or transfer them to others.

Gas cylinders or steel cylinders, as important equipment for storing and transporting gases, their safe use and management are related to people's lives, property safety, and social stability. Everyone should understand the relevant knowledge of gas cylinders, master the correct usage methods and management key points, and ensure the safe operation of gas cylinders. At the same time, relevant departments and enterprises should also strengthen the supervision and management of gas cylinders, strictly implement relevant standards and specifications, and jointly create a safe gas-using environment.
